 What Is Statamic Sidecar?
-------------------------

Statamic has announced a new product called **Sidecar** that bridges the gap between static site generators and a polished content management experience. The core idea is straightforward: you can edit your existing Markdown files through the Statamic Control Panel without ever importing them into Statamic collections or handing Statamic ownership of your project.

Your files stay exactly where they are. Front matter stays front matter. Your folder structure remains untouched. Config files like `navigation.php` or `sidebar.json` are not moved or transformed. Your static site generator continues rendering the site exactly as it always has.

How Sidecar Works
-----------------

Sidecar acts as a read/write layer between the Statamic Control Panel and your existing file system. Instead of pulling content into Statamic's own data model, it surfaces your Markdown files inside the familiar CP interface. Editors get a proper content management experience; your SSG pipeline never knows anything changed.

Key capabilities Sidecar brings to your existing setup:

- **Statamic Control Panel** — the same intuitive UI Statamic users already know
- **Drag-and-drop content tree** — rearrange navigation without touching config files manually
- **Customizable publish forms** — tailor editing forms to match your front matter schema
- **Live Preview** — see rendered output before publishing

Why This Matters for Laravel and PHP Developers
-----------------------------------------------

Many Laravel and PHP teams maintain documentation sites, knowledge bases, or marketing sites built on static site generators such as VitePress, Docusaurus, or similar tools. These projects often store content as Markdown in a Git repository, and the usual options for giving non-developers editing access involve one of the following pain points:

- Migrating all content into a CMS (time-consuming, risky)
- Running a headless CMS alongside the SSG and syncing via webhooks (fragile)
- Asking non-developers to submit pull requests (unrealistic for most teams)

Sidecar eliminates all three problems. There is no migration, no duplicate source of truth, and no elaborate syncing mechanism. The static site generator keeps doing its job; Sidecar simply adds a friendly editing layer on top.

Practical Use Cases
-------------------

Statamic specifically calls out the following scenarios as strong fits for Sidecar:

- **Documentation sites** — let technical writers update docs without a Git workflow
- **Knowledge bases** — enable support teams to maintain articles independently
- **Any Markdown-driven site** where non-developer contributors need access

Key Takeaways
-------------

- Sidecar connects the Statamic Control Panel to any static site generator's Markdown files
- Files, front matter, and folder structure are never modified or moved
- No migration or content-syncing infrastructure is required
- Non-developers can contribute content without learning Git or Markdown tooling
- Features include a drag-and-drop content tree, customizable publish forms, and Live Preview
- Ideal for documentation sites, knowledge bases, and similar Markdown-heavy projects

If your team maintains a Markdown-based site and has struggled to give editors a comfortable interface without disrupting the existing build pipeline, Sidecar is worth a close look.

 Frequently asked questions
---------------------------

Does Sidecar require migrating existing Markdown content into Statamic? No. Sidecar is explicitly designed to avoid migration. Your Markdown files, front matter, folder structure, and config files stay exactly where they are. Statamic reads and writes them in place without taking ownership of the content.

Which types of sites benefit most from Statamic Sidecar?Statamic highlights documentation sites and knowledge bases as primary use cases — essentially any Markdown-driven site where non-developer contributors need a friendly editing interface without disrupting the existing static site generator pipeline.

What editing features does Sidecar provide through the Control Panel?Sidecar surfaces the Statamic Control Panel's drag-and-drop content tree, customizable publish forms, and Live Preview for your existing Markdown files, giving editors a full CMS experience without changing the underlying file structure.
