What Is AI Review for Laravel Upgrades?
---------------------------------------

Laravel Shift has always automated the deterministic parts of a Laravel upgrade — the changes that can be made confidently without risk of a false positive. Everything else gets a comment in the pull request for a developer to handle manually. That gap between "Shift can do this reliably" and "a human must do this" has always existed, and it has always required developer time.

As of July 2026, Shift creator JMac is closing that gap with the beta release of **AI Review**: an optional add-on that runs automatically after your Shift completes and performs a second pass on your upgrade PR.

How AI Review Works
-------------------

When you add AI Review at checkout, it runs automatically once your Shift finishes. Your pull request enters an `[AI Review]` state while the process runs. Under the hood, AI Review is powered by **Claude (Opus 4.8)**.

The review is guided by the comments already present in the PR:

- Comments that contain curated AI prompts run directly.
- Other comments are reformatted and optimised for the AI — for example, Composer dependency changes are restructured to help the model perform better and faster.

When the review is complete, the PR state is updated and a final summary comment is added. All changes are committed atomically, consistent with how Shift itself works.

Why a Second Pass Makes Sense
-----------------------------

Shift's philosophy has always been conservative: a confident wrong change is worse than no change at all. That means some changes are intentionally left as comments rather than automated edits. AI Review targets exactly those cases.

There are three categories of upgrade work:

1. **Shift handles it** — deterministic, reliable, automated.
2. **AI Review handles it** — contextual changes that benefit from understanding your codebase.
3. **You handle it** — changes that genuinely require human judgement.

AI Review shrinks category three without compromising the safety of category one.

Availability and Pricing
------------------------

During beta, AI Review is available as a **$9 add-on** to any Laravel upgrade Shift, starting with the [Laravel 6.x Shift](https://laravelshift.com/upgrade-laravel-5.8-to-laravel-6.0). It is completely optional.

If you already use the open-source [Shift AI skills](https://github.com/laravel-shift/shift-ai) locally to review your Shift PRs, think of AI Review as the hosted, token-included version of that workflow. If you do not have local AI access or the configuration set up, AI Review provides a straightforward way to automate those final upgrade steps.

JMac has stated that as feedback is gathered and the process is refined, the goal is for AI Review to eventually be included with Shift by default.

Key Takeaways
-------------

- AI Review is a beta add-on for Laravel Shift that performs a Claude-powered second pass on upgrade PRs.
- It targets the gap between Shift's reliable automation and changes that require full manual review.
- Powered by Claude Opus 4.8; all changes are made in atomic commits.
- Currently a $9 optional add-on, available for Laravel upgrade Shifts starting from Laravel 6.x.
- Long-term goal is to include AI Review with Shift at no extra cost.
- Developers already using the Shift AI skills locally get the same capability hosted, with tokens included.
