 Filament v5: What We Know and How to Get Ahead
----------------------------------------------

Filament v5 is still in active development, but the direction is clear from the public roadmap, open pull requests, and Dan Harrin's community updates. The core team is doubling down on three pillars: **stricter PHP 8.3+ type coverage**, a **revised plugin/component contract**, and **schema composition improvements** that reduce the magic behind `->schema([])` calls. None of these are breaking for the sake of breaking — each solves a real pain point that surfaces at scale.

This article is not a changelog. It is a preparation guide for engineers who want to migrate with confidence rather than scramble.

---

Typed Schemas and Stricter Return Types
---------------------------------------

Filament v4 introduced the unified `Schema` API. v5 pushes further by enforcing return types on component methods that previously returned `static`. The practical impact: if you have custom field plugins or form components that override core methods without explicit return types, static analysis will start failing.

Start auditing now:

```php
// v4 — works but PHPStan level 6+ may warn
public function extraAttributes(array $attributes): static
{
    $this->extraAttributes = $attributes;
    return $this;
}
// v5-ready — explicit, no ambiguity
public function extraAttributes(array $attributes): static
{
    $this->extraAttributes = array_merge($this->extraAttributes, $attributes);
    return $this;
}
```

Run PHPStan at level 6 against your custom Filament classes today. Fix the return-type gaps before v5 lands.

---

Revised Plugin Contract
-----------------------

The `Plugin` interface is gaining mandatory methods. Currently `getId()` is the only required method. v5 drafts show `getVersion()` and `boot(Panel $panel): void` becoming part of the contract, separating registration from boot-time side effects.

```php
use Filament\Contracts\Plugin;
use Filament\Panel;
class MyPlugin implements Plugin
{
    public static function make(): static
    {
        return app(static::class);
    }
    public function getId(): string
    {
        return 'my-plugin';
    }
    // Prepare this now even if v4 does not enforce it
    public function getVersion(): string
    {
        return '1.0.0';
    }
    public function register(Panel $panel): void
    {
        // asset registration, config merging
    }
    public function boot(Panel $panel): void
    {
        // side effects that need the panel fully built
    }
}
```

Splitting `register` and `boot` mirrors Laravel's own service provider lifecycle. If your plugin currently does everything in `register`, move side-effect code to `boot` now — it is safe in v4 and required in v5.

---

Schema Composition: Removing Implicit State
-------------------------------------------

One subtle v5 change is how nested schemas resolve their `$livewire` context. In v4, deeply nested `Section` and `Grid` components inherit context implicitly through a shared state bag. v5 makes this explicit via a `SchemaContext` value object passed through the tree.

For most applications this is invisible. For custom components that call `$this->getLivewire()` directly inside `setUp()`, you will need to switch to the injected context:

```php
// v4 pattern — avoid this in new code
protected function setUp(): void
{
    parent::setUp();
    $livewire = $this->getLivewire(); // implicit
}
// v5-compatible pattern
public function mount(SchemaContext $context): void
{
    $livewire = $context->getLivewire(); // explicit
}
```

If you do not have custom components that reach into the Livewire instance directly, you are already safe.

---

Practical Preparation Checklist
-------------------------------

- **Run PHPStan level 6** on all custom Filament classes and fix return-type issues.
- **Implement `getVersion()` and `boot()`** in every plugin, even if v4 does not require them.
- **Avoid `getLivewire()` in `setUp()`** inside custom schema components.
- **Pin Filament to `^4.x`** in `composer.json` and watch the v5 branch for `UPGRADE.md` commits.
- **Write Pest feature tests** for every custom resource and action now — they will catch regressions on upgrade day.

---

Key Takeaways
-------------

- v5 enforces stricter PHP 8.3+ types; audit custom components with PHPStan now.
- The plugin contract gains `getVersion()` and `boot()` — add them proactively.
- Schema context becomes explicit; avoid implicit `getLivewire()` calls in component setup.
- Splitting register vs. boot logic in plugins mirrors Laravel's own lifecycle and is safe today.
- A solid Pest test suite is your best insurance against upgrade-day surprises.

 Frequently Asked Questions
----------------------------

  3 questions

     Q01 Is Filament v5 stable enough to use in production today? No. As of this writing v5 is in active development. Use v4 in production and track the v5 branch to prepare your codebase incrementally.

      Q02 Will Filament v4 plugins break immediately on v5? Plugins that only implement `getId()` and `register()` will likely trigger deprecation notices or interface errors once the new contract is enforced. Adding `getVersion()` and `boot()` now costs nothing and prevents that breakage.

      Q03 How do I test my custom Filament components against v5 changes without upgrading? Run PHPStan at level 6 or higher against your custom component classes. Most v5 type-safety issues surface as static analysis errors before any runtime breakage occurs.
